Joseph Daul said: “The issues of debt reduction, of growth through a competitive economy, and therefore of an exit from the economic crisis are very important issues for the EPP Group, as they are for the Irish and for all Europeans. The Irish people will decide for themselves on how they will vote in this referendum on the fiscal compact. Because Ireland is the only country to put the Stability Treaty to a vote by referendum, its decision will send a message to the whole of Europe. And today, more than ever, we need a positive signal. This Treaty is a European solution to our European problems. A solution which guarantees solidarity and transparency and which restores confidence”

Joseph Daul concluded: “What has happened in recent months in Ireland, as in other EU countries, must serve as a lesson. I am convinced that, if we want to get out of this crisis in a way that is sustainable, we must first balance our budgets. We must also stabilise our economies and implement greater transparency between Member States by means of more integration. The themes at the heart of our discussions over the next two days - Cohesion Policy reform, the reform of our economies, a European Tourism Strategy - are all examples of political instruments that will encourage a return to sustainable growth”

Jacek Protasiewicz said: "Before considering signing the Association Agreement, and its further ratification, the EU should closely watch the Ukrainian Government's next steps and how it adheres to common values such as democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Parliamentary elections recognised by international organisations as free and fair would be one of the main steps in this regard, though not exhaustive"

Jacek Protasiewicz added: "Depending on the way the elections are held, including the possibility for opposition leaders to take part, the EU may reconsider whether to proceed with the Association Agreement or whether to freeze it, if either the basic conditions for an honest electoral campaign or fair elections are not fulfilled"

Jacek Protasiewicz concluded: "We should focus on the forthcoming elections in the Ukraine and monitor them closely. In my opinion, the conflict between the opposition and government is running high and the electoral fight between them will be very tough, if not brutal. The way the elections are executed may define the direction EU relations with the Ukraine take. We do not have the luxury of much time anymore as the fate of EU-Ukraine relations is at stake. It is imperative to agree on a clear timeline with the Ukrainian authorities on important issues that need to change, and give them all the necessary support to accomplish those changes"
