That's why the European Parliament should be careful about introducing any policy or tax that threatens this competitiveness. David Casa explained that while he agrees that banks and other institutions should foot their fair share of the costs of the crisis, an FTT was not the best way to achieve this objective. "

The opinion says the tax should go ahead even if only some member states opt for it. The tax rates proposed by the Commission (0.1% for shares and bonds and 0.01% for derivatives) are considered suitable and pension funds should be the only sector exempted from the tax. The European Parliament had been calling for a FTT, for close to two years....
