Over hele Afrika er der en massiv afhængighed af importerede fossile brændsler, som æder en meget stor del af regionens eksportindtægter. Selv Nigeria, regionens største eksportør af råolie, er nød til at importere raffineret brændstof, så jeg vil faktisk sige, at i Nigeria gør olie mere skade end gavn. Både når vi ser på økonomien, klimaet og de sociale spændinger, den skaber,« siger Alison Doig fra Christian Aid, der mener, at Afrika rent faktisk har mulighed for at ændre kurs. »Det kræver naturligvis et helt andet tankesæt. Men vi skal huske, at vi næsten starter fra nul, at der er et kæmpe umættet marked for energi i Afrika, så her er virkelig mulighed for en ny begyndelse. Men ideen om, at fossile brændsler er vejen frem, skal ændres,« siger Alison Doig. Energi til alle At markedet er der, er ingen i tvivl om. Ifølge FN mangler 1,2 mia. mennesker på globalt plan adgang til energi. Og 45 procent eller 585 mio. af disse bor i Afrika syd for Sahara. Det svarer til, at mere end to tredjedele af befolkningen her ikke har nogen form for energiforsyning. Derfor har FN gjort 2012 til året, hvor der skal sættes fokus på energi-fattigdom, hvilket er en af de største barrierer for udvikling. Og energien skal findes i bæredygtige kilder.
