Il n'est, en effet, un secret pour personne que la superficie du Lac Tchad a connu une réduction drastique ces cinquante dernières années, passant de 25.000 km2 à moins de 2.000 km2. Les causes sont, non seulement le changement climatique responsable de la diminution de la pluviosité dans la région donc du volume des écoulements des eaux de surface des tributaires du lac Tchad, mais aussi des demandes en eau sans cesse croissantes, destinées à l’irrigation. En plus, la qualité des eaux dans le bassin est également menacée du fait de leur caractère endoréique. Toutes les pollutions générées dans le Bassin et transportées par les eaux restent dans le Bassin et risquent à terme de se concentrer dans le lac Tchad.
